How to make Confluence post in HipChat

Today I want to pick up where we left each other at the end of my previous blog post The 5 things new HipChat users need to know. Hopefully you've had a chance to try HipChat and realized just how awesome it is.

For this entry, we will focus on how to make Confluence automatically post in HipChat when something happens.

HipChat for Confluence

When I presented HipChat to our dev team, one of the first questions I got was "Can we setup Confluence to post to HipChat rooms ?" Of course you can ! You'll need to install the free HipChat for Confluence add-on. The best part: It's made by Atlassian, we always like that !

Installing the HipChat for Confluence Add-on

To set it up, as a Confluence Administrator go to the Find New Add-Ons section and search for HipChat. Once you've installed the plugin, there will be a new section in the Confluence Administration called HipChat Configuration. There, you will need to paste an "Admin" API key which you generate from the HipChat API Auth Tokens page (You will need to be HipChat Group Admin to do so). Once that is done, you can start configuring the Confluence to HipChat Integration.

Confluence to HipChat Integration

The Confluence to HipChat integrations are setup at the space level and you will need to be Space Admin to set it up. Go to the (1) Administration section of the space you want to integrate with HipChat, and then click on the (2) Integrations tab. Next, (3) go in the HipChat "sub tab", and you will be able to (4) setup which rooms the space should post in, and more importantly when it should post. The plugin curretnly gives these three choices:

  • Blog Created
  • Page Created
  • Page Updated

In the following example, I want our corporate news space to post to our corporate HipChat room when a blog post is added.

If you're looking to do more

There's also the Go2Group HipChat Plugin for Confluence, which is also free, and gives you a few additional evens on top of the three events we just saw. At the time I'm writing this, the Go2Group plugin is not available for OnDemand. The additional events are: "Page updated with major changes", "Page updated with minor changes", "Page moved", "Comment Added".

Share your HipChat experience

I'm having a great time using HipChat with my team, but I'm looking for other cool ways to make the most out of HipChat. Please share some of your use cases here !
